Christian Germanaz is a French designer associated with the renewal of furniture in plastic materials in the late 1960s. Trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École Boulle sculpture workshop, he worked from 1960 in architect Ionel Schein’s studio. In 1965, he joined the Airborne design office.
Chez Airborne, Germanaz développe le fauteuil Half & Half, designed around a self-supporting composite structure. The project was shown in 1968 in the context of an exhibition devoted to contemporary seating at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Intended for both domestic and public spaces, the chair reflects contemporary research into fibreglass, moulded shells and continuous forms.
Le Half & Half was produced in relatively limited numbers. Airborne archives document orange, grey and black versions in particular. The model is now representative of late-1960s French experimentation with furniture in synthetic materials.
