JACQUES PHILIPPE

1896–1958 · Sculptor-decorator · Furniture

Based in Rennes, Jacques Philippe contributed to the renewal of Breton decor and furniture in the 1920s. His Celtic art workshop offered ensembles for interiors: dining rooms, studios, and offices. René Trotel reproduced a four-door oak sideboard dated 1938, held at the Musée de Bretagne, as well as an episcopal throne with its stool and bench (p. 207).

His work also includes religious furnishings, notably for the major seminary in Saint-Brieuc and the chapel of Saint-Alexis in Noyal. Testimonies from the Breton press and the magazine Kornog place him among the pioneers of this revival. His career sheds light on the artistic milieu in which the Seiz Breur movement developed, without conflating aesthetic affinity with membership in the group.

ANDRÉ AND VALENTIN BRANTHÔME

André: 1926–2018 · Valentin: 1897–1979
Family workshop in Rostrenen · furniture

André and Valentin Branthôme are brought together here in the same workshop story: that of the Branthôme establishments in Rostrenen and the family transmission of the furniture-making trade. Valentin, born in 1897, is the father of André, born in 1926. He is distinct from his own father, also named Valentin (1865–1926).

The factory on Rue Joseph-Pennec, studied by the Heritage Inventory, documents furniture production in Rostrenen. The careers of Valentin and then André reveal the continuity of a family business, its expertise, and its adaptation to 20th-century practices. The attributions of furniture still need to be compared with the marks, provenances, and workshop documents.

A family memory: an article by Pierre Branthôme

In "The Noble Mansion of Porzh-Moëlou in Rostrenen," published in October 2023, Pierre Branthôme recounts the history of an old house and a fireplace plaque preserved by his family. He describes the construction, in 1953, of a house built by Valentin for his son André, the future successor to the Valentin Branthôme company. Presenting himself as André's firstborn, the author evokes his memories of this house and the passing down of this antique object. This account sheds light on the family context of the workshop and complements the existing documentation of its post-war continuity.

The history of this workshop is presented within the context of the revival of Breton furniture. Family continuity after 1947 is not, in itself, sufficient to establish personal involvement in the Seiz Breur movement.

JORJ RUAL

1901–1986 · Cabinetmaker · Rennes

Jorj Rual, also known as Georges Rual, was a cabinetmaker from Rennes whose career combined workshop work and teaching. He joined Seiz Breur in 1932 and participated in the 1937 International Exhibition. He took over the family business in the mid-1930s. Trotel specifies that he was running the company in 1935 and reproduced the sculpted paneling of the Ar Pillig crêperie, rue d'Argentré in Rennes, where he worked alongside René-Yves Creston and Jean Goron (p. 212).

His training and collaborations opened regional furniture to contemporary research on structure, proportions, and interior design. His work was part of the network of artisans and decorators who gave concrete expression to the Breton modernist project. The furniture catalogues document his pieces and their attributions; they serve as reference points to be compared with other works and archival material.

JIM-E. SÉVELLEC

1897–1971 · Painter and decorator · Furniture

Born in Camaret-sur-Mer, Eugène Sévellec, known as Jim-E. Sévellec, developed a body of work as a painter, illustrator, and decorator closely linked to Brittany. He also worked for the Henriot pottery factory and became an official painter of the French Navy in 1936. In Brest, his dioramas of the Tanguy Tower contribute to the city's historical memory.

His work in furniture design deserves special attention. The Musée départemental breton (Breton Departmental Museum) notably houses a table and sideboards designed around 1935. With their carved wood, dance and processional scenes, and geometric motifs, the furniture becomes a decorative narrative. These pieces allow us to study the interplay between painting, decoration, and living spaces.

RENÉ-YVES CRESTON

1898–1964 · Artist, ethnologist · co-founder

In 1923, René-Yves Creston participated in the founding of Seiz Breur with Jeanne Malivel and Suzanne Candré-Creston. Painting, engraving, earthenware, furniture, and interior design formed a shared field of research: to create a modern Breton art, present in everyday life. He played a major role in organizing the group after Jeanne Malivel's death.

His collaborations with artisans, notably Joseph Savina, linked design to production. From the 1930s onward, his travels and research also led him toward ethnography. His involvement in Breton museums extended this focus on objects, costumes, and traditions. As curator in Saint-Brieuc, he organized an exhibition in 1964 dedicated to four centuries of Breton furniture.

SUZANNE CANDRÉ-CRESTON

1899–1979 · Decorative Arts · Co-founder

Born in Paris, Suzanne Candré-Creston participated in the founding of the Seiz Breur in 1923. Her work focused particularly on printed fabrics, earthenware, and graphic designs. For the 1925 Paris exhibition, she designed textile patterns and ceramic decorations executed by Henriot.

Her research combines geometry, repetition, and contrasting colors. In some kitchenware designs, the letters themselves become a decorative motif. Her sketches demonstrate a desire to bring modern forms into everyday objects. This journey highlights the essential role of applied arts and female designers in a movement often portrayed solely through furniture.

XAVIER DE LANGLAIS

1906–1975 · Painter, engraver and writer

Born in Sarzeau, Xavier de Langlais trained in fine arts in Nantes and then in Paris. A painter, engraver, and writer, he contributed to the Breton artistic revival and participated in the Seiz Breur movement. With James Bouillé, he joined the Breton Workshop of Christian Art, where architecture, painting, and decoration were conceived together.

His work spans various media: illustration, engraving, mural painting, and books. A professor at the Rennes School of Fine Arts from 1948, he also pursued a reflection on pictorial techniques. His writings in French and Breton, including his Arthurian cycle, extend his ambition to connect contemporary creation with Breton culture. He thus embodies another dimension of total art, at the intersection of text and image.

ROBERT MICHEAU-VERNEZ

1907–1989 · Painter and multidisciplinary artist · Furniture

Born in Brest, Robert Micheau-Vernez developed a body of work in which color played a central role. His practice combined painting, illustration, ceramics, and decorative arts. His collaborations with Henriot made his work with modeled figures and groups particularly visible.

The furniture constitutes another aspect of this work. A bedroom suite designed in 1932, now in the collection of the Musée départemental breton, includes wardrobes, a bed, bedside tables, a chest, and armchairs. The sculpted bas-relief decoration creates a dialogue between surfaces and volumes. Trotel specifies that this oak furniture, made in 1932, features motifs drawn from the neo-Celtic repertoire (p. 213).

GASTON SÉBILLEAU

1894–1957 · Sculptor and cabinetmaker · Redon

Trained in sculpture, Gaston Sébilleau became a major figure in the arts and crafts scene in Redon. Wounded during the First World War, he continued his work in woodworking and developed a cabinetmaking workshop. He participated in the early years of the Seiz Breur adventure.

For the 1925 exhibition, he created furniture for the Osté building based on designs by Jeanne Malivel and René-Yves Creston. His work demonstrates that decorative innovation relied as much on designers as on manufacturing expertise. As an interior designer, he also worked on the layout of homes, hotels, and villas. His career intertwined sculpture, furniture, and interior architecture. His oak furnishings for the mayor of Redon's office, created in the 1930s, combine the furniture with the town's sculpted coat of arms (René Trotel, p. 206).

The Saint Joseph Chapel in Lannion, built in the 1930s, offers a particularly clear example. Architecture, stained glass, sculpture, ironwork, and cabinetmaking are coordinated in a single project, executed with specialized craftsmen.
