With Lyrical hospitality, emotion in the art of receiving, The FRENCH DESIGN by VIA brings together design and art pieces in Paris around a question: how does an interior welcome and evoke emotion? In the selection, two floor lamps produced by Disderot particularly caught our attention: the 2093-225 by Olivier Mourgue and the J14 by Joseph-André Motte.

Olivier Mourgue: a flower that reflects light

The 2093 series originated from research initiated by Olivier Mourgue in 1967 around a floral form. On the 2093-225 floor lamp, aluminum petals and a silver-capped bulb create a reflected light. Disderot dates the model to 1969; the exhibition catalog identifies the presented example as a Disderot edition from 2025. This distinction between design and edition is essential when documenting a collectible light fixture.

Joseph-André Motte: the sweetness of a flower bud

Designed in 1957, the J14 develops a different idea of the flower: a glass globe diffuses ambient light in 360 degrees. Disderot describes it as a variation of the J13 and now offers it in a numbered edition. The exhibition catalog also presents it as a Disderot piece from 2025. The dialogue between these two objects lies in their different ways of making light a presence in space.

The scenography by Studio Andrée Putman organizes the exhibition around dialogue, intimacy, lightness, memory, and surprise. For DIZAGN, this juxtaposition serves as a reminder that the history of 20th-century French design is as much about uses and atmospheres as it is about forms. It also invites us to examine closely the dates, materials, and production conditions of each piece. Our research dedicated to Olivier Mourgue prolongs this attention.
