Étienne Fermigier
1932–1973 · DESIGNER · LIGHTING · FURNITURE · INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Étienne Fermigier's career was as brilliant as it was brief. He died accidentally at the age of forty-one, leaving behind an astonishingly vast body of work that covers furniture, lighting, interior architecture, and industrial design.
This diversity makes him one of the most representative creators of the expansion of the design profession in 1960s France.
BIOGRAPHY
After training at the École Boulle, Étienne Fermigier joined the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs, from which he graduated top of his class in 1954. He opened his own office in 1957. From the outset, his activity refused any narrow specialization: he designed furniture and lighting, but was also interested in equipment, technical objects and questions of industrial aesthetics.
This curiosity is essential to understanding his work. Fermigier sees the designer as an intermediary between industry, use, and form. Assemblies, metal profiles, molded parts, and mechanical elements are not concealed: they participate directly in the expression of the object.
He collaborated with several major publishers of the time. Disderot allowed him to develop highly precise lighting fixtures; Airborne, Steiner, Minvielle, Sentou, and Roset disseminated his furniture designs. The structures are often refined and rational, but they never descend into dry functionalism: Fermigier possessed a keen sense of proportion, graphic design, and detail.
In 1959, the creation of the Meubles et Fonction gallery with Pierre Perrigault marked a major milestone. The space functioned simultaneously as a gallery, exhibition space, interior design studio, and publishing platform. It provided Fermigier with a setting to showcase avant-garde furniture and directly explore the relationship between his designs and domestic spaces.
His work also falls within the institutions. A founding member of the National Center for Contemporary Applied Art, he received the René Gabriel Prize in 1967. The archives of the Mobilier national document several research projects conducted between the late 1960s and 1973: chairs, tables, lighting fixtures and sets intended for official spaces or for mass production.
His untimely death interrupted a rapidly evolving body of work. Fermigier now appears as a pivotal creator: trained in the culture of French furniture, but already fully committed to the logic of industrial design, standardization and new materials.
WORK AND FORMAL LANGUAGE
Fermigier's design language is characterized by its constructive clarity. Chromed or lacquered metal, aluminum, glass, wood, and plastics are used without concealing their nature. Technical elements become part of the design. The lighting fixtures particularly exemplify this logic, with rods, joints, and reflectors that compose a minimalist architecture.
In furniture design, he readily seeks modularity, repetition, and reduced components. Precision never precludes a certain sensuality: curves, polished surfaces, and contrasts in materials give the objects a highly graphic presence.
