Ado Sato was the son of the painter Key Sato and the Franco-Japanese opera singer Yoshiko Sato. He graduated from Keio University before settling in Paris in 1962.

His work lies at the intersection of geometric abstraction, Concrete Art and a Pop sensibility, combining simplified anthropomorphic forms with bold colors. In 1968, the year this print was produced, he exhibited at Galerie Templon in Paris and took part in the Bradford International Print Biennale. In 1971, he was given a solo exhibition at the ARC, Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.

The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris also holds a work entitled Emergence, dated 1965, screenprinted and numbered 21/50, which was acquired directly from the artist in 1968. It may be an earlier version or a separate edition of the same subject. The Museum of Modern Art in New York also holds two works by Ado Sato.
