NEMO — FRANÇOIS SCALI & ALAIN DOMINGO
GROUP FOUNDED IN 1982 · FRENCH DESIGN · FURNITURE · INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE · EXPERIMENTATION
NEMO was founded in the early 1980s by François Scali and Alain Domingo. The group belongs to a generation of French designers who re-examined domestic typologies by combining structure, color, image and new materials.
Their furniture lies at the boundary between functional object and manifesto: seats, valets and fittings readily use tubular metal, colored surfaces and a deliberately legible geometry.
BIOGRAPHY
François Scali, born in 1951, and Alain Domingo, born in 1952, founded NEMO in 1982. Their approach developed in a context where French design was opening up to more narrative and experimental forms, in dialogue with interior architecture, graphic arts and postmodern culture.
The Mobilier national documents their participation in ARC commissions in the early 1980s. As part of the "carte blanche" granted to young designers, NEMO notably designed seats that deliberately reduced the vocabulary of the armchair to a few elements: a metal frame, seat surfaces and a very direct construction.
The group also develops objects produced in small or medium series. The Kestar valet, produced by Tebong in 1984, illustrates this approach: a graphic, almost sign-like silhouette, where color and the metal tube contribute as much to the object's identity as to its use.
NEMO's projects are part of a broader renewal of French design in the 1980s. Their work demonstrates a desire to move beyond strict functionalism without abandoning constructive legibility. The object becomes a spatial and visual device, often instantly recognizable.
The current rediscovery of this period places NEMO in the history of collectives and agencies that participated in the transition from industrial design of the 1970s to a freer, more colorful and conceptual creation.
WORK AND FORMAL LANGUAGE
NEMO's vocabulary favors straightforward structures, clean colors, and forms that embrace their constructed nature. The objects can evoke silhouettes, symbols, or miniature architectures. This economy of means gives them a strong graphic presence.
Tubular metal, panels, and industrial materials are used without concealment. Function remains central, but it is often reformulated by a shift in proportions or by staging the structure.
