The object depicted is the celebrated Washington lamp, shown from the front: its large reflector forms the central black disc.

César-Deschenes’s photographic composition features the Washington lamp, designed by Wilmotte in 1983 for the French Embassy in Washington and produced by Lumen Center Italia. Through the frontal framing, the lamp’s circular reflector becomes an abstract graphic form crossed by a powerful beam of light.
