\u00c9tienne Fermigier Coffee Table for J.E.R.<\/h2>\n

Rare set of three circular \u201cLow Table\u201d coffee tables designed by \u00c9tienne Fermigier<\/strong> and manufactured by J.E.R. circa 1968.<\/p>\n

Each table rests on a sculptural base formed by three folded stainless-steel fins<\/strong>, joined at the centre in a perfectly balanced composition. The circular top in original smoked glass<\/strong> reveals the radial geometry of the structure.<\/p>\n

The contrast between the industrial precision of the stainless steel, the transparency of the smoked glass and the simplicity of the design gives this model a presence that is both minimal and sculptural. The three examples may be displayed together or separately.<\/p>\n

Model History<\/h2>\n

Created in the late 1960s for J.E.R., this coffee table reflects the renewal of French furniture during the Trente Glorieuses. Designers were replacing traditional forms with an industrial aesthetic based on economy of materials, structural clarity, and the use of metal and glass.<\/p>\n

Here, Fermigier transforms three sheets of folded stainless steel into a particularly expressive self-supporting base. The construction is not concealed: it becomes the table\u2019s ornament. This structural radicalism places the model alongside contemporary experiments by leading French designers associated with the Mobilier national, \u00c9cole Camondo and CNAAC.<\/p>\n

Biography of \u00c9tienne Fermigier<\/h2>\n

Born in Paris in 1932, \u00c9tienne Fermigier studied at \u00c9cole Boulle and then at the \u00c9cole nationale sup\u00e9rieure des arts d\u00e9coratifs, graduating in interior architecture in 1957. He soon established his own design studio.<\/p>\n

In 1959, he joined Pierre Perrigault to open the Meubles et Fonction gallery on Boulevard Raspail in Paris. The gallery championed rational, functional contemporary furniture suited to industrial production, while introducing French, Italian and Scandinavian design.<\/p>\n

Fermigier collaborated with major manufacturers including Airborne, Arflex, Steiner, Sentou, Roset, Minvielle, Disderot, Monix and Verre Lumi\u00e8re. His work extended beyond furniture to lighting, radios, televisions, office furniture and industrial objects.<\/p>\n

A founding member of the Centre national d\u2019art appliqu\u00e9 contemporain and a teacher at \u00c9cole Camondo, he received the Prix Ren\u00e9-Gabriel in 1967. His career was cut tragically short by his accidental death in 1973, aged 41. Several of his works are now held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the Mus\u00e9e des Arts d\u00e9coratifs in Paris.<\/p>\n
