Conceived for both indoor and outdoor use, particularly in public spaces, it explores the structural possibilities of plastics. Germanaz made the first mould himself in a neighbouring plasterer\u2019s workshop. The design consists of two identical half-shells joined by rubber edging to form a self-supporting, modular structure. In 1968, when only one half-shell existed, the designer used two mirrors to create the illusion of a completed chair for Fran\u00e7ois Barr\u00e9, then deputy director of the Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs. Impressed by the project, the museum requested a complete example for the exhibition <em>Les Assises du si\u00e8ge contemporain<\/em> ; Germanaz then completed the prototype under considerable time pressure. He trained at the \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure des Arts D\u00e9coratifs and then at the \u00c9cole Boulle, in the sculpture workshop, where he met Olivier and Pascal Mourgue. In 1960, he joined the practice of architect Ionel Schein, a pioneer of plastic architecture, working with him for three years. He was subsequently introduced to Charles Bernard and joined Airborne\u2019s design office in 1965.<\/p>\n<p>This dual grounding in drawing and three-dimensional form, combined with a precise understanding of industrial processes, shaped an approach based on material experimentation and structural development. The \u201cHalf &amp; Half\u201d armchair is its most radical expression: two identical moulded-polyester half-shells, joined by rubber edging, form a self-supporting seat designed to be used either alone or in rows within collective spaces. Presented at the Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs in the exhibition <em>Les Assises du si\u00e8ge contemporain<\/em> in 1968 and subsequently produced by Airborne in a small series, the model has become an emblematic work of French research into plastics during the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1970s, Christian Germanaz established his own design office and expanded his practice into interior architecture, public-space interiors and exhibition design. He also created furniture and lighting in which structure, light and textiles actively define space. His most significant designs include the <em>Lumipoche<\/em> lamp of 1977, the <em>Comedia<\/em> armchair of 1982\u2014developed with support from VIA and presented in New York\u2014as well as the <em>Catamaran<\/em>armchairs, produced by Baumann that same year.
